CUBADUPA 2023 Just a wee snippet from that time we were featured on the National Breakfast News segment for CubaDupa! SO… This year, we were delighted to be brought onboard as an Event Delivery Partner for CubaDupa 2023 - our first foray into the amazing annual street festival held along Cuba Street in Wellington. For the 2 day event spanning the weekend of 25th and 26th March, our partnership involved our very own activation as well as the coordination of print, delivery and install of event signage as well as crew assistance for a number of design installations across the site. For us, the highlight of the weekend was our immersive activation piece entitled ‘The Chamber of Reflection’. We sought to reimagine an activation designed in collaboration with Storybox back in 2022. For us, the ability to repurpose elements from their past life goes some way towards fulfilling our goals for conscious event design. The Chamber of Reflection was built into a vacant retail unit below the Naumi Hotel and perfectly fit the space to emit portal-like vibes when you stepped over the threshold. A combination of light, sound, graphics and mirrored surfaces provided festival-goers with a unique and thought-provoking experience that would allow them to reflect on their own lives and the world around them. The activation was a huge success, with thousands of festival-goers taking the time to queue up and experience the Chamber of Reflection over the course of the festival. Festival Director Drew James commented “We absolutely loved having S°LK involved in CubaDupa. You have an awesome, professional, efficient and dedicated team! We really value your input and the Chamber of Reflection was a run-away success. LUMIFY Laneways 2022 in the heart of Queenstown.​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​ Silk Design were brought onboard to fabricate and install the entrance archway to 'Freaktopia Alley' located along Cow Lane for the 4-day event. LUMIFY '22 - Feaktopia Alley Some great photos snapped by punters and photographers at this years LUMA pivot event 'LUMIFY Laneways' that took over Queens birthday last weekend. This was 'Freaktopia Alley' which was one of 3 lanes in downtown Queenstown transformed into a visual feast! Silk Design were engaged to produce and install the entrance archway signage for this lane, designed by Paul Klaass. We created the CNC machine cut files using various layers to create a 3D sign which was then painted with UV reactive paint to bring it to life at night! SHE'S BACK!! This incredible floral exhibition was originally designed and created back in 2016 by @veeverscarter & @eventconcept to promote the New Covent Garden Market at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and was a celebration of the Queen's 90th birthday. Now, it's back on display in Sloane Square for 'Chelsea in Bloom' (London's largest free-to-attend festival of flowers) in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! It's so exciting that this project has come out for round two as Lexi was on the original design team and lead the project that won a Gold Award and the 'New Design Award' at the show back in 2016. CNC MACHINE OPERATION Do you have a project that requires precision cutting or details that you just can't achieve with hand tools? Our CNC machine does just that, from timber to plastic & signage sheets, a CNC cutting machine can accurately cut to the specifications of your design. We use this machine daily to achieve our design projects. In case you were curious, CNC stands for Computerised Numerical Control. It is a computerised manufacturing process in which pre-programmed software and code controls the movement of production equipment. Clever stuff! THROWBACK TO WRAPPING A TRAIN! > Swipe for more images. 📸: Photos courtesy of @wgtncc via @gomedia_nz A wee throwback to when the Silk team wrapped an entire train carriage in Wellington for our clients Christmas campaign. Such a fun campaign to work on and this was the first time these trains had an arty glow-up! The artwork was supplied to us based on a template that we created for the wrap and then the Silk team got to work on printing and installing this mammoth wrap. We installed over 60 drops of vinyl to each side of the train totalling a whopping 400m of print! Vinyl Logo application for @noho_co @hurricanesrugby These chairs were particularly tricky to apply vinyls to as they are made from Nylon (from recycled ocean plastics - mostly fishing nets etc) and have a Silicone coating which prevents adhesives from ‘going off’. Our fix was to strip back the top Silicone layer using Acetone first to prime the surface and then go in over the top of the vinyl with a reapplication of Silicone. Our brief was to deliver a Casino Royale themed Christmas party for ANZ bank which included a backdrop and assorted vinyl cut outs. The event was held at The Grand and hosted approx 150 people from all around the country (in 2019). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Project Deliverables. We created a free standing backdrop with filament bulbs inside an ANZ logo. The backdrop was a huge success with the client and used across all forms of social media. The 2015 Serpentine Pavilion designed by #selgascano ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 15th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion was designed by José Selgas and Lucía Cano, and consisted of a double-layered plastic skin in a variety of colours, wrapped around a series of metal arches. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "When the Serpentine invited us to design the Pavilion, we began to think about what the structure needed to provide and what materials should be used in a Royal Park in London," said the architects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "These questions, mixed with our own architectural interests and the knowledge that the design needs to connect with nature and feel part of the landscape, provided us with a concept based on pure visitor experience. . "We sought a way to allow the public to experience architecture through simple elements: structure, light, transparency, shadows, lightness, form, sensitivity, change, surprise, colour and materials." . CHRISTMAS TRAIN WRAP - INSTALL TIMELAPSE Client: @gomedia_nz Location: Wellington > Swipe for more images and to see the template we drew up in-house for our clients' design team. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Project Brief. Now this was such a fun project to be wrapping up 2021 with... literally! The Silk Design team were engaged to prep a template for artwork, print and install the train wrap in time for Christmas. This is the first time these trains in Wellington have been fully wrapped and we were stoked with the result of countless hours drawing up a grid to perfection and some long days on site to get this all installed. Danny and Simon did an epic job on this project! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Project Deliverables. This project required a fair amount of time allocated to drawing up the artwork template. Lexi (our in-house designer) used Illustrator software to create a precise layout, working from engineers drawings combined with measurements and photos taken from the train carriage. We installed over 60 drops of vinyl to each side of the train totalling a whopping 400m of print! The window vinyl was a perforated vinyl in order to retain one way visibility from inside the train. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you've got anything that needs wrapping, we've got you! WELLINGTON AIRPORT ACTIVATION Client: Nelson Regional Development Agency Venue: Wellington Airport > swipe right for more pics! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Project Brief. To bring to life a display stand to promote the Nelson Tasman region to travellers passing through Wellington Airport. The display was in place throughout November 2021, let us know if you spotted the display standing proudly beneath the eagle! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Project Deliverables. This project included all aspects of our services from 3D visualisations to graphic layouts, print, fabrication and installation. The high res imagery was printed onto ACM and mounted into a bespoke timber frame for seamless edges. The 'zig zag' design allowed this piece to be free-standing in situ with hinges between frames allowing us to pivot the stand into the best position. SUPPORT SUMMIT NZ 2019 Client: Shopify Venue: Te Papa Museum, Wellington > swipe right for more pics! Project Brief. To design and construct a set backdrop based on imagery delivered to us from a feature wall that was set up in Canada for an event for Shopify. The set was to be constructed inside Te Papa Museum in the Amokura Gallery exhibition hall. Project Timeline. Our timeline for this job was 2 weeks from acceptance of the brief and we had to work within the health and safety regulations of Te Papa to ensure this was achievable. Project Construction.
